Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne led a strong reply from visitors with the bat on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Tuesday, May 24.

Dimuth stitched a 95-run opening stand with Oshada Fernando and laid a solid platform after Bangladesh were bowled out for 365 in 116.3 overs just after Lunch on Day 2.

Ebadot Hossain gave Bangladesh the breakthrough in the 26th over following which Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis stalled the Bangladesh charge. Mendis managed just 11 runs from 49 balls but he made sure Sri Lanka did not stutter in the final session of the day. Eventually, Mendis was dismissed, trapped LBW, by Shakib Al Hasan towards the end of the day’s play.

Kasun Rajitha, who came in as the nightwatchman, did his job as captain.S Karunaratne remained unbeaten on 70 as Sri Lanka ended with 143 for 2, trailing Bangladesh by 222 runs.

Earlier, Bangladesh rode on a stunning 175 not out from Mushfiqur Rahim and 141 from wicketkeeper Litton Das to post a competitive total after they registered as many as 6 ducks and 2 single-digit scores.

Mushfiqur and Das combined when Bangladesh was reeling at 24-5 in the opening session, and finished the first day at 277-5.

Kusan Rajitha struck in the eighth over Tuesday, having Das caught at second slip for 141 to finally break the 272-run stand.

Rajitha struck again three balls later, securing his first five-wicket haul in a test innings when he had Mosaddek Hossain (0) caught behind to a delivery that moved slightly as Bangladesh slipped to 296-7.

But Mushfiqur remained resolute, reaching his 150 from 291 balls when he nudged a delivery from offspinner Ramesh Mendis past square leg for two.

Asitha Fernando then dismissed Taijul Islam (15) and Khaled Ahmed (0).

16 runs were scored for the final wicket even as Ebadot Hossain did not score off 20 deliveries as Mushfiqur carried his bat.
