Carlo Ancelotti took a cheeky dig at Mohamed Salah’s “revenge time” talk, saying that Real Madrid are also looking for revenge as they lost to Liverpool in the 1981 European Cup Final in Paris.

Real Madrid and Liverpool are set to clash in a rematch of the 2018 final, in which Read Madrid defeated Liverpoool 1-3. When Salah was asked about the match, the Liverpool forward was quoted as saying, “Yes… we lost in the final. It was a sad day for all of us and now it’s revenge time.”

Responding to Salah’s mission, Real Madrid manager Ancelotti told UEFA.com, “Will Liverpool be out for revenge for the 2018 final loss to Madrid? Real Madrid are also looking for revenge because they lost a final against Liverpool in (the 1981 final in) Paris. I don’t think it (means much). Two great teams will face each other, and the one with more courage and personality will win at the end.”

In a rematch of the 2018 encounter, Real Madrid are chasing a record-extending 14th trophy while Liverpool are aiming for their seventh. Both sides had an impressive season, with Liverpool winning the EFL Cup, FA Cup and missing out on Premier League glory by just one point and Real Madrid clinching the La Liga and Supercopa de Espana titles.

In the 2018 final, Karim Benzema handed Real Madrid an early advantage before Sadio Mane equalled it for Liverpool. However, a double from Gareth Bale helped Madrid beat the Reds.

Ancelotti also heaped praise on Liverpool and their manager Jurgen Klopp. “Like I said, (Liverpool have) a lot of quality together, with high intensity and good organisation.

“They’re one of the best teams. (Klopp is) a great coach. I have a good relationship with him. (He’s) A great coach who brought some new things to football with the intensity and offensive pressure (of his teams). He’s doing a great job.”
