HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Super Kings lost 10 matches in IPL 2022
  • CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs the second time
  • MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja captained CSK in 2022

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have undoubtedly been one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, over the last three seasons, the Yellow Army has shown signs of vulnerability. Even as they became the champions in 2021, the four-time IPL champions failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

In 2022, CSK lost as many as 10 matches in the league stage for the first time in their career. After losing their first four matches, the Super Kings failed to get into the top four. Prior to the tournament, CSK were jolted with a blow after their premier pacer Deepak Chahar got injured and was ruled out of the tournament.

The Super Kings roped Chahar in for INR 14 crore after releasing him initially. After Chahar’s absence, CSK had to give chances to lesser-experienced cricketers, Simarjeet Singh and Mukesh Chaudhury. Although Singh and Choudhary did well, Chennai’s bowling attack lacked penetrative power big time.

Ravindra Jadeja’s off-form didn’t help them by any means. After taking over captaincy from MS Dhoni, Jadeja looked hapless and his performance with bat and ball also dipped. Midway through the tournament, he handed leadership back to Dhoni, but by then, it had become extremely tough for the Super Kings to make a comeback.

Ruturaj Gaikwad started the tournament on a poor note after he won the Orange Cap in the previous edition of the IPL. When he started performing, CSK already found themselves in a rabbit hole. Shivam Dube did his job with the bat, but his credentials with the ball were questioned after he was taken to the cleaners.

When they seemed to have got back to winning ways, it was already way too late. Going forward, CSK should have long-term plans with New Zealander Devon Conway, who played beautifully in the limited chances he got in the tournament.

The Super Kings are a successful unit, but there are chinks in their armour that were exposed this season. Above all, CSK should look for their next captain as Dhoni is set to turn 41 this July.
