World No.1 Iga Swiatek registered her 30th consecutive win to beat American Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2 and reach the third round of the French Open on Thursday. Swiatek, the favourite to win the title in Paris, is on a 30-match unbeaten streak.
The World No.1 never looked in doubt, rushing to a one-set lead in 20 minutes. Riske was able to save some face, holding her serve twice in the second set, but it was of no concern to Swiatek, who eased to victory.
“I’m pretty happy. Happy to play solid tennis. It’s my first singles match on Lenglen and it was a pleasure,” Swiatek said.
“Just being focused and to put pressure on my opponent so I have the initiative at the start of the rallies. I’m getting better and better at it but I’m still not an expert.”
Next up for Swiatek is Danka Kovinic of Montenegro with the draw looking increasingly favourable for the Pole, following the early eliminations of defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur and Greek world number three Maria Sakkari.
In the men’s draw, 20th seed Marin Cilic recovered from a set down to beat Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in a match that went on for nearly three hours.
