French Open: Iga Swiatek dreams of playing mixed doubles with ‘inspiration’ Rafael Nadal

World No.1 Iga Swiatek said that she dreams of playing mixed-doubles with 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal. The 20-year-old Swiatek has made an impressive start to the ongoing tournament at Roland Garros, having already qualified for the third round.

On Thursday, May 26, she continued her dream run after beating the USA’s Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2 at Court Suzanne Lenglen. The Polish star, who is currently on a 30-match winning streak, said that Nadal is her “inspiration” and she has learned to play top-spin from him.

“Oh, my God. I would love to play mixed doubles with Rafa. I think it would be a really great experience. But when was the last time he played mixed doubles?” I want him to be focused on singles,” Swiatek was quoted as saying.

“Well, for sure, Rafa’s a huge inspiration, but it’s not like I was writing in a notebook exactly how he’s playing and then trying to do the same, because, well, first of all, he’s a man,” Swiatek said.

“It’s pretty hard for us girls to play like men, because they have more power, for sure. But, you know, I always wanted to play topspin, so I think he influenced me in that way,” she added.

Swiatek is currently one of the three players among the 10 top-seeders who have qualified for the third round of the French Open 2022, along with Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa.

The 35-year-old Nadal, in the meantime, has advanced to the third round after beating Frenchman Corentin Moutet in straight sets in the second round. Earlier this year, Nadal surpassed Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer’s tally of 20 to become the player with most Grand Slams.
