HIGHLIGHTS

  • Navgire is currently a part of Velocity in the Women’s T20 Challenge
  • Navgire was in excellent form in the Senior Women’s T20 League
  • Navgire became the first Indian to get a 150 plus score in a Women’s T20

Nagaland hard-hitting batter Kiran Navgire said that MS Dhoni’s iconic six off Nuwan Kulasekera in the 2011 World Cup final inspired her to pursue the sport. The 27-year-old was at her very best in the Senior Women’s T20 League, having smashed 35 sixes. The right-hander scored 525 runs and also became the first Indian to notch a 150 plus score in a Women’s T20.

Navgire hammered a 76-ball knock of 162 against Arunachal Pradesh. She also picked up seven wickets in the tournament, including a four-wicket haul. After her exploits at the domestic level, Navgire is currently taking part in the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge where she is representing Velocity.

Navgire, who played her first game for the Velocity against Harmanpreet Kaur on Tuesday, said that she aspires to smash sixes like Dhoni, who recently plied his trade for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

“I only ever wanted to play cricket because I dreamt of hitting sixes like Dhoni. A lot changed for our country, and me personally, when MS Dhoni hit that six to win the [2011] World Cup,” Navgire was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

A RARE CHANCE

Prior to the Women’s T20 Challenge, Deepti Sharma, who replaced Mithali Raj as the skipper of Velocity, said that she was awestruck by Navgire’s ability to hit the leather.

“I was watching Kiran at the nets for the first time the other day and found that she is such a terrific power-hitter, like Shafali [Verma],” Deepti said.

After doing well for Nagaland, Navgire talked about doing well against the likes of Sophie Ecclestone, Alana King, Salma Khatun and other high-class bowlers.

“The prospect of going up against world-class bowlers is exciting and daunting at once. It would be a rare chance for an uncapped player like me to face bowlers of such high calibre like [Sophie] Ecclestone, [Alana] King, Salma [Khatun],” Navgire said.
