IPL 2022 Qualifier 2: Gained a lot of confidence speaking to Virat Kohli, says RCB’s rising star Rajat Patidar

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s latest star Rajat Patidar on Friday said he has gained a lot of confidence about his own game, crediting Virat Kohli for helping him out during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 seaosn. Patidar made heads turn as he played one of the knocks of the IPL season, hitting a match-winning 112 under pressure for RCB in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday.

Rajat Patidar played only 4 games in IPL 2021 for Royal Challengers Bangalore and he was released by the former finalists. There was disappointment in the store for the 28-year-old Maharashtra batter as he went unsold in the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, he got a surprise call-up from RCB in April as he was roped in as an injury replacement for Luvnith Sisodia for Rs 20 lakh.

Patidar walked into bat in the Eliminator after LSG got the big wicket of RCB captain Faf du Plessis for a golden duck. However, the youngster put the pressure right back on the Lucknow bowlers. He took the charge in the powerplay with Virat Kohli playing second fiddle. Patidar never took the foot off the pedal as he hit 112 not out from just 54 balls, hitting 7 sixes and 12 boundares.

Patidar became the first uncapped player to hit a hundred in the knockout stages of the IPL. More importantly, his 112 not out helped RCB post a match-winning total of 207 on a day when big names du Plessis, Kohli and Glenn Maxwell failed to trouble the scorers much.

“I gained a lot of confidence talking to Kohli and he shared his experiences about where I can get better,” Patidar told Star Sports ahead of RCB’s Qualifier 2 match against Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Shedding light on his mindset, Patidar added: “Felt really good, it was my first century and that too it came in the IPL, so feels really great. I don’t think too much about the performance, because sometimes it comes and sometimes it doesn’t so I just focus on my preparation.”

Patidar, playing only his second IPL season, has had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the best in the business. In fact, Kohli heaped rich praise on the Maharashtra batter, saying he is a bright talent to watch out for.

“That was one of the best innings I have ever seen under pressure. And I have seen many. That level of striking, that is some batting level. Watch out for him,” Kohli said.
