Former Barcelona talisman and one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game, Lionel Messi lamented his current club Paris Saint-Germain’s loss at the Champions League this season. Messi, who won the Ligue 1 on Sunday, 22 May posted on his official Instagram handle that the Champions League defeat against Real Madrid hurt him badly because PSG were the better team that night.
The French club crashed out of the Champions League this season, losing 3-2 on aggregate against Real, who are now in the Champions League this season. The club was was drubbed in the first leg of the game 3-1 on a night when Paris tanked badly. Only Kylian Mbappe lit up the game for Paris, dribbling past Madrid defenders, but found no support from his teammates.
In the second leg however, Paris played like men possessed, with Lionel Messi and Mbappe taking on the entire Madrid defence. Paris were even awarded a penalty, but Messi squandered his chance against Thibaut Courtois, who was Madrid’s best player on the night.
Courtois made a total of eight crucial saves against a total of 21 shots taken by PSG players.
Messi in his Instagram post pointed out the same and said that PSG had a bitter taste from the CL elimination.
“We still have the bitter taste of our elimination from the Champions League in a tie where we were the better team, but, at the same time, I want to remember the joy of having added another title, which was one of the objectives,” he said.
However, the Argentine footballer said that he wanted to thank the Parisians for how he and his family were treated by them and hoped that Paris would get more success in the next season.
“The season has come to an end I want to thank my teammates for how they have treated me and my family since I arrived in always looking after and supporting me,” read the message.
“This year was different with everything that happened, but, in the end, we won the league title, and it made me very happy to win my first trophy here in Paris.”
“I am sure that good things are coming in 2022. It will be an important year and we will fight to be competing with ambition for everything. See you soon!”
PSG have managed to keep Kylian Mbappe till 2023 and should be able to amass a strong forward-line this season. With Angel di Maria leaving at the end of the season, the club might be interested in buying the services of an out and out forward to put more variety in their attack.
